About Me: | I am a political science and philosophy student at the University of Ottawa. I did formal debate in high school, but haven`t for some years. My views aren't as rigid as the ``big issues`` page may paint me, it`s just that they`re very broad and black and white questions. |

Beliefs: | The inherent power of knowledge to make life better. The primacy and centrality of education in a healthy society. The value of appreciation and the perfection of it leading to the ``good life`` as the Greeks might put it. A basic skepticism that keeps us from knowing anything with absolute certainty. Given my first belief and this one, the fact that knowledge is more a process than simply information. |

The Universe's Existence is Explicable

I will defend the proposition that the universe as an existing "whole" can be thought to more plausibly have an explanation for its existence than its negation. In other words, is it more plausible to think that there is an explanation for why the universe exists or should we think the universe to more plausibly have no explanation for its existence? This is not a debate on what that explanation is (e.g, the necessity of the universe, God, multiverses, etc) but on what is in principle more epi...
America's education system would be more effective if completely privatized.

My general opening statement: America's education system would be more effective if completely privatized. Competition is a key ingredient when considering the results of any sector of our economy. Public/subsidized schools effectively prevent competition; therefore, the price of education is higher than it needs to be (considering educational spending from taxes/debt), and the quality of education is sub-par. The ultimate remedy for this would be to allow privatization and competition to exist...
Nationality (on its own) is not a good reason to support something

It is not uncommon to see individuals who support people, sports teams, or even militaries simply because that entity shares in their nationality. In this debate, I will argue that, on its own, a shared nationality is not a good reason to hold or express support for any of the above stated (or other) groups. The first round will only be for the acceptance or rejection of definitions. The following two rounds will be for arguments and rebuttals. I thank my opponent in advance for accepting th...
Knowledge has inherent value

The first round will only be for the clarification of terms and acceptance of the debate. Inherent: existing in something as a permanent and inseparable element, quality, or attribute [1] Value: relative worth, merit, or importance [2] Knowledge: acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles, as from study or investigation [3] (Namely, possessing data which a person cannot reasonably doubt, pertaining to some ``reality`` whatever the nature of that might be.) I look forward to an in...
