16 Is simply to early to get a drivers license. Some studies from the University of Rochester Medical Center show that the brain isn't fully developed until 25 years old. This shows drivers should be at least 18 before they can get a license.
Whether or not the brain is "fully developed" is irrelevant. An alien with 1000 IQ could have a brain which is not "fully developed" until it is 50. Should we not allow it to drive cars at age 45 just because it hasn't hit its peak of 1000 IQ? Of-course not. The age is set at 16 because there should be a minimum level of maturity for drivers, Not because those under 16 suffer poor spacial awareness, Poor sight, Poor reaction speeds or any other factor which would directly affect driving ability. Driving is a basic task that humans are amply mentally equipped to undertake, And don't need to be near 'peak performance' to be able to do so safely and effectively. What's more, Multiple studies show that the brain starts to atrophy at age 30. What should we do, Ban everyone between 25 and 30 because they aren't in this arbitrary peak which hasn't been shown necessary to be a safe driver? There is already a lock safety lock on who can drive - the test. You must be a competent driver to pass the test, And so once we can assume a person is reasonably mature, Ie at 16, Then they can show their competency with a test and then there is no reason to deny them a license. |

But I completely disagree that they should be allowed on a road at age 16. I mean, That's just asking for more accidents to happen.
This implies that you shouldn't have a license until 25. Doesn't even remotely justify getting one at 18.
