I believe it is not a musical instrument. |

A mayoniase container can technically be used as a drum. You can hit the top of the can like a drum. The drum is classified as an instrument. Thus I have proved my point.
Yes, but the mayonnaise itself is not being used as an instrument, its container is. |

The mayonaise itself can be used as a instrument if used properly. If you dump a pile of mayoniase on a table, and pat the mayonaise,it creates a squsihy and drum like pattern. Pat your hand over and over on the mayo creates a drum like pattern. I have proved my point.
This brings us to my final argument. This is the definition of a musical instrument. noun noun: musical instrument an object or device for producing musical sounds. Since mayonnaise is made for consumption, and is not specifically made for producing musical sounds, it cannot be considered a musical instrument. Vote con. |

Reasons for voting decision: Con refutes Pro's first argument about the mayonnaise jar, indicating that the jar is the instrument, not the mayo. Finally, Con gives a good reason why mayo is not an instrument. Though this was done in the last round, and should have been done earlier. Nonetheless, Con prevails even disregarding the last round.

Reasons for voting decision: Con correctly pointed out that the jar was being used, not the mayonnaise, in Pro's first example. While Pro's second example does illustrate mayonnaise being used to produce sound, it does not meet the definition Con provided- it is not intended to be used to make sound. I think Pro could actually have won this had they speculated that one could make one's own mayonnaise explicitly to make sound with- in which case it is intended to produce sound and could be used to do such. As it stands, Con wins.
A tool is used to achieve a task
Music is an arrangement of sounds, tones, harmonies
Musical instruments are primitive to complex in the range of sounds they can create
Mayonnaise can be used as a musical instrument, although it may be primitive in form
