i have had a very hard time getting a straight answer on whether people think light yagami is evil or not. I believe he did what anybody would do if they had that power. He also stretched its limits to see how powerful he really was so he could make it harder for them to stop him. I completely support him.

Here's the issues I have with Light Yagami. First off, He didn't have principles that he himself had to abide by. We can look at a character like Lelouch from Code Geass, Many will call him evil, But in the end he had his principle of, "The only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed. " Moreover, Light Yagami was pretty pathetic at his end, Mainly because off his lack of thought into such philosophies. However, As an intellectual character, He's amazing. And if he simply wasn't so pathetic when facing his own demise, He'd of been much for attractive to me.

Either way, He IS evil. The reason of this is simple, He was caught. When talking with the investigation team trying to capture him, They had a talk about whether or not Kira was evil. The debate was sparked by Matsuda who said he can understand the reasoning behind Kira's actions. Light tells him something similar to this, "If Kira succeeds and becomes law, Then Kira is justice. If Kira fails and is captured, Then he was evil. " It's very simple, Because Good and Evil are both just opinions in the end. If Kira succeeds, He becomes justice and any evil won't show up, Fearing Kira - he made himself into GOOD. If he fails, Then he has both not achieved his goal and was judged by the criminal system, Found guilty, Or EVIL.

The mere fact that he was captured and failed means that he was Evil.

Also, Let's imagine what would have happened if he had succeeded. People would be living in fear, Wouldn't they? Eventually, He'd even die and someone else would have to take his place. This is the issue in any state founded by a single intelligent and charismatic leader, That they'll eventually die and someone else needs to take their place. Even if Light as Kira doesn't oppress the people hard enough for them to want to rebel, You can be certain that down the line of successors, One eventually will make the people rebel. This would likely make people see the entire rule of Kira as an oppressive and evil act.

thank you for your argument. Everything you have said is true, And at points in the story when other people were kira they did act differently so it is possible for someone if they succeeded him to turn evil. But light himself isn't truly evil. In the beginning of the show he has a conversation with raiuk about if killing people is truly bad or not. People do agree that he is right. So many people supported him in the end that several countries surrendered to him and trusted his judgments. Even if in the end he lost and they did find him guilty, He and many other people still believed he was justice. I believe that if raiuk hadn't killed him with the death note, He probably would have been rescued by his supporters and found a way to get the notebook back. He still could have won. Because as you said he was pretty pathetic at the end and panicked, If he haden't then maybe he would still be alive. Even after all that, I still support him. And if i had the death note, I wouldn't make the same mistakes he did in the beginning. He did a great job at not getting caught at first, But after l died and near showed up he lost his touch, And thats how he got caught. He trusted other people with his power. Light yagami stated this to make the world a better place. In the end, He wanted a new world. He is not evil.

"he has a conversation with raiuk about if killing people is truly bad or not"

I watched the dub, It may have been worded differently, But I'm fairly certain the conversation probably only pertained to criminals. Light killed anyone who stood in his way, Including innocent police officers. Moreover, When his own father was dying, The only thought that went through his head was how to play the son role correctly in order to get his father to kill Mellow.

Throughout the anime, It always seemed like he was struggling between being Light and Kira. Because his humanity wasn't completely lost, But he was mostly overtaken my the role of Kira. At the beginning, He had a hard time accepting he had killed someone, Even though he was a criminal. Later on, You see him showing emotion due to L's words, And showing emotion when he realized he may have to kill his kidnapped sister. However, In the end, His Kira "side" would make the ultimate decisions.

"So many people supported him in the end that several countries surrendered to him and trusted his judgments"

Only because they had no idea how Kira was killing, And so they surrendered fearing their own lives.

"Even if in the end he lost and they did find him guilty, He and many other people still believed he was justice. "

For evil and good, There should be a majority consensus as a rule of thumb.

"Even if in the end he lost and they did find him guilty, He and many other people still believed he was justice. "

Doubtful, He was bleeding out and the police were already chasing him. They likely would have found him from a blood trail. Moreover, No supporter knows who Kira truly is. The only ones who knew about him at that point were either dead or had their memories erased.

"Because as you said he was pretty pathetic at the end and panicked, If he haden't then maybe he would still be alive. "

Also not likely, He was surrounded. Being pathetic was the only reason he had a chance to get away, With the other guy seeing that and having a mental breakdown to say the least.

"I wouldn't make the same mistakes he did in the beginning"

His major mistake was showing that he had access to police information.

"But after l died and near showed up he lost his touch"

Not at all, His plan would have been completely perfect and he'd of won if Mellow simply hadn't of kidnapped Takuda (or however her name is spelled). This was a move that made the other Kira think he had to kill Takuda, So he got the notebook he was hiding away. Light didn't notice this detail for two reasons: He had a slip of the death note he could already use and the other Kira wrote Takada's death in the notebook the exact same way - since they were so similar in thought. This meant neither one of them would realize that it was actually not their writing that killed Takuda but someone else. The small interruption by Mellow was all that was needed to make his plan crumble at the seems, Without him being aware.

"He trusted other people with his power"

He had no choice I'd say. L was on him, And if killings didn't resume, The suspicion would never have gotten off him.

"Light yagami stated this to make the world a better place. In the end, He wanted a new world. He is not evil. "

An oppressive world. Don't forget his future plans was also to not tolerate lazy people and have everyone be a highly productive member of society.

"And if i had the death note, I wouldn't make the same mistakes he did in the beginning"

Here are a few issues. The Death Note is limited, Which was one of the problems he hated. Too many requirements and too many limitations. However, Being caught is practically impossible. In order for the story to progress at all, Light needed to slip up once or twice, Otherwise L literally would never have had any leads to follow.

Moreover, Killing all those criminals does what? Lowers the crime rate? The Death Note is VERY limited. You can only control people a certain amount of time and only to a certain extent, And then they HAVE to die. It's hard to truly change the world.

Again, As an intellectual character, He was amazing. However, When it comes to good and evil, I just can't imagine a world run by Kira would actually be good.

Light Yagami is indeed evil. He started off trying to create a Utopia, However he then became addicted and sick with killing people, And claimed himself as a deity of a "new world". He therefore started off with good intentions, Then became a psycho serial killer.
